Land to be snatched from the Severn river for expansion of the United States Naval academy grounds at Annapolis, Md., is indicated, for the most part, by the broken lines in this view. Numbered areas are:
(1) Thompson stadium, to give way to a new stadium to be built outside the grounds within two years;
(2) Farragut field, used for drills and athletics, to be moved to the area to be filled in the foreground;
(3) Bancroft hall, overcrowded dormitory that will gain two wings to be built on the present Farragut field;
(4) Dewey basin, to be filled;(5) about half of river area outside basin breakwater that is to be filled, and
(6) Santee basin, to be filled. This work, the fourth major landfill since 1898, will add 60.5 acres.
Note: Santee basin (6) was not filled. According to the RADM Robert McNitt’s book Sailing at the U.S. Naval Academy:
“Dewey Basin was filled to provide athletic fields in 1958. Santee Basin, fortunately, was saved from the same fate by officers who saw it as the Academy’s last direct connection with the water.” (Courtesy USNA Archives).
